Bike maintenance & place names

The forecast for yesterday was rain, rain and more rain. So instead of the usual Monday ride on my day off, I planned a morning of bike maintenance. I finally changed the back tyre that had been waiting for a couple of months. The old one was down to the thread!

Thanks to You Tube, I also sorted out the gears. Now I’m not the most dynamic of bike maintenance guys but I can’t see the sense of giving someone money to do what I can competently do myself. If I muck it up, the bike shop can un-muck it AND give me feedback for next time. I just never have the time to devote a whole hour to it every week or fortnight…

Today I rode over to Matching Green to check out some material for an ongoing post that I’m working on for Remembrance day. The place names in this country still crack me up. The village further on is called Matching Tye (seriously) and there’s another on my commuter routes called Green Tye.

Badgers Mount, Fairleigh Wallop,  Upper and Lower Slaughter (collectively known as “The Slaughters”), Pratts Bottom and Lickey End are others that come immediately to mind. If you want a funny place name, come to England. Or at least look on a map of England…
