Family ride

Today we decided on an impromptu ride along the Flitch Way up the back to check out a nearby cafe. Unfortunately it wasnt open so we went another 3km for the required incentive to get the boys out of their early afternoon malaise-a snack and a drink at the Local Food Co-op.

The Flitch is great-accessible, reasonably flat, off road, soft conditions if you fall and a number of options for refreshments whichever direction you travel. It’s ideal for our low paced family rides and a great option for me to shelter from the wind if its a bit too blowey on a solo Monday ride.

On the way for spicey pumpkin soup. Recent storm damage is evident on the left

It rained on the way back, only for 10 minutes but it spat into our faces at biblical proportions. Its still that mild that I chose to wear a pair of denim shorts, sandals and a hoodie over a base layer so was soaked within 5 minutes.  Both boys were soaked through too but I am extremely proud to report their resilience-no complaining about being cold, just pleased to be dragged out for some fresh air, nature and of course good food.

Even better, Ben has finally got the concept of the gears/power relationship AND started using his previously redundant front derailleur as a result (its only taken me a summer of gentle persuasion). So my plans a guided Monday rides of 9km to or from school next summer are on target…
