The parking fiasco

I dont usually ride to work on a Thursday as I take the boys to school in the car and head into work for 09.30. So when I decided to cycle into work today it was based on logic. Parking will be a nightmare for the rest of the winter as the Board have decided to plonk a temporary building to accommodate an overspill ward smack bang in the middle of the visitor’s car park. Because we’re here for patients and not ourselves (that’s obvious as we’ve had our salary frozen for 2 years) visitors will be allocated space in the staff carpark while some of us will have to park off site a little way away. To be fair, the Trust are picking up the difference for this as the parking firm charge more than the Trust for parking. By 09.30, there are no spaces so today at least I would save myself the agro of finding one AND enjoy my trip in the sunshine.

Anyway, I decided that as the forecast was dry (but cold) I would ride in and be an hour late in starting. That’s no problem as my work is reasonably flexible and I am taking tomorrow off to collect Grandma from New Zealand from Heathrow at 6 a.m. So today was the only day of the week that I could do it.

And do it I did! I layed up just right on top- base layer, sleeveless fleece and the waterproof with my new Sealskinz winter hat making its biking2work debut.

Tights and loose shorts on the bottom half with thick woolly socks and trainers (the socks are too thick for my cycling shoes). I was really toasty warm on the way in but that’s when it was 8°C cycling into a cool NW wind giving it a feel of 2°C.

I’m now hiding from the cold waiting for my socks and base layer to warm up on the radiator-It’s 8.15pm and I was expecting to be outta here 3 hours ago.

Wish me luck…
