It hasn’t been the cold, the wind or the rain that kept me off the bike in December. The aggressive virus that chose to reside in my upper respiratory tract over the Christmas period is still here but it was a game of two halves.

I last rode on 15th Dec, a cool dark afternoon, confident that the headcold that laid me low the week previous was on its way out. With the tailwind, I felt like Wiggins on a time trial such was my relative speed. I’m now writing after a week of sore throat and with a headache, not from the full sinuses but the lack of sleep from all the coughing over the last 2 nights. That damned virus never left me or more likely another one stumbled across my tired self.

So its not been a great end to 2013 or start to 2014 but I used the time for some quiet reflection & goal setting for the year. I was disappointed not to ride more km in 2013 than 2014-problems with the knee contributed to that.

But I put in more commuting distance in 2013 than 2012 despite making 19 fewer journeys in to work. The cold spring weather and the knee again are an explanation for the work thing and I did use the bike more to get out to the shops (or did I use the shops as an excuse to get on the bike?). The 3km ride up to the shop and back or the 16km return journey to the supermarket were turned into distances of 20-30km+ in an effort to increase my overall distances & stamina.

There is the possibility of getting a brand new bike in April thru the cycle to work scheme so I expect to do more km to and from work this year and I’m aiming for 2 commutes to work in the summer months.

But the first thing to do is rest and not force myself to get back out there too soon or rush it-today is a sunny, dry oasis in the middle of a time when the UK is gradually becoming submerged so I would otherwise be quite tempted to ride somewhere…
