A nice surprise

Yesterday when I was going through the purgatory of managing my 6 year olds hygiene and clothing, he asked me a question. “Daddy, can we ride our bikes to school on Monday?”. Immediately the morning’s frustrations melted away as he requested that I get his un used for weeks bike out of the shed so that he could go for a blast out the front in our cul-de-sac.

The cycle to/from school thing has been bugging me since I made the first tentative steps towards it last summer. I have planned to repeat it weekly on a Monday in the summer this year but dont want to force it and turn them off the idea either. Its an 8km ride on the safest route which involves a lot of getting off and walking whether it be to cross roads or walk up a hill. There’s also the Nags Head for a rewarding glass of lemonade at the half way point before leaving the town for the off road stage. So its a fair way for little legs and will take around an hour ruling out a  morning trip for now.

Back to Monday. The bikes are going on the rack and were gonna leave for school early. Then we’ll park 2km away and ride into school. Given the continued windy and wet weather as seen by the pic below, this will sate their appetite for now. I’ll probably leave the car and take an extended route home before making the return journey in the afternoon. This will give my Monday ride some variety. Nice…
