Today was my birthday. I went for a ride instead of browsing the shops with the Next vouchers that I was given. It was an easy decision-ride on a sunny, mild day at the end of October or go shopping? The weather was moving elsewhere but the shops aren’t. I was rewarded with my 2nd best time for the Feathers Hill climb, better even than a member of British pro-cycling glitterati. To be fair to Alex Dowsett, he was probably casually spinning his way up the hill during a recovery ride on a lazy Sunday afternoon far away from the cut-throat world of the pro peleton or the pressure of the time trial.

I showered and the boys and I headed up to IWM Duxford. We had 3 hours there until closing and its the best £17.50 I’ve spent watching them play in a playground. There was a Spitfire

A single cockpit plane converted into a double cockpit model for training

flying about practicing acrobatics during our stay and for a third of the cost of an airshow, I got full value for money. For once I didn’t care whether the boys visited the hangars or not-I was happy being a nerdy Dad sitting with his coffee marvelling at the show while taking videos and pics of events while they played on oblivious to this sense of occasion.

I even bought a poster relating to cycling (from an Air museum??!). Seems the cycle corps were big at the start of WW1 until things got a bit muddy…

Last year high winds, rain and power cuts. This year sun, warmth and nostalgia. What a difference a year makes…

Kudos Jim-I nicked your saying about polishing the sofa with my butt etc. Hope you don’t mind me using it to describe my ride today on Strava…
